In a previous article we discussed the world’s least fuel efficient cars and, needless to say, some of the numbers we saw were staggering. In regard to the world’s least fuel efficient trucks, vans and SUVs, you would expect the numbers to be even worse, but have no fear, as the fuel mileage numbers for these classes of autos are a bit better. After all, the vehicles that made the list do not have V12s, but they do sport fuel hungry motors in their own right. Let’s find out what the least efficient trucks, vans and SUVs are on the market today.

Small And Standard Size Pick-Ups
|
To begin, let’s take a look at the most common size and type of pick-up trucks on the road today: the small and standard size. Sharing the prize in the small pick-up category are the Toyota Tacoma 4WD and the Ford Ranger 4WD. Both four wheel drive trucks are powered by a 4 litre V6 that gets them an average fuel mileage of 15 miles per gallon. Both also achieve fuel efficiencies in city driving conditions of 14 miles per gallon and 18 miles per gallon the highway. All told, if you own one of these trucks you’ll end up spending around $2,661 on gas a year. Environmentally speaking, both trucks pump out 12.2 tons of carbon dioxide and consume 22.8 barrels of oil every year (one barrel of oil is equal to 42 gallons).

In the standard sized pick-up class, we have the Nissan Titan 4WD. This beast sports a 5.6 litre V8 and an automatic transmission that allow it to get on average, just 14 miles per gallon. In the city it is only capable of 12 miles per gallon, while on the highway it improves slightly to 17 miles per gallon. In terms of fuel costs, an owner will spend roughly $2,849 on regular gas this year alone. In the environmental arena, the Tundra releases 13.1 tons of carbon dioxide and consumes 24.5 barrels of oil yearly.

It is a rare day when we do not see a minivan on the road, as this class of vehicle has become the preferred choice of countless families to haul their brood around in. Even though they are a huge convenience for families, minivans aren’t exactly the best thing for the environment unfortunately. Taking the cake as the world’s least efficient minivan is the Toyota Sienna 4WD powered by a 3.5 litre V6. On average the Sienna gets 18 miles per gallon and 16 and 21 miles per gallon in the city and on the highway, respectively. When all is said and done at the end of the year, owners of a Sienna will have spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,218 USD on gas, released 10.2 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and used up 19 barrels of oil.

In the full sized van category, the popular Chevrolet Express 1500 Conversion Van finds itself as the world’s least efficient. This large van is powered by an equally large 5.3 litre V8 that helps it get only 14 miles per gallon on average and 13 and 17 miles per gallon in the city and on the highway, respectively. All told at the end of the year, an owner will spend $2,849 USD on gas, release 13.1 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and consume 24.5 barrels of oil. This is not to mention the hefty $75 USD+ bill every time it is filled up.

Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have long been known as some of the least fuel efficient vehicles on the road and, unfortunately, the Mercedes Benz ML 63AMG is by far our least fuel efficient vehicle in this article. The ML 63AMG is powered by 6.3 litre V8 and even though it has a seven speed automatic transmission, it is only capable of getting 12 miles per gallon total. In the city it only get 11 miles per gallon and on the highway, it still consumes fuel at a rate of 15 miles per gallon. It is also the most expensive auto to own of the autos mentioned, as it costs an owner $3,636 yearly for fuel. The 63AMG also has the largest carbon footprint on our list, as it releases 15.2 tons of carbon dioxide yearly and to boot, it consumes 28.6 barrels of oil.
