At one time or another, most of us have owned at least one “gas guzzler” that forced us to fill up and empty our wallets more often than not. For those with experience with fuel hungry autos it would seem that on some days the needle on the fuel gauge moved more often than the speedometer. But even with the green movement in the automotive industry charging full steam ahead, there are still plenty of cars out there that are the epitome of a gas guzzler. I’m sure many readers have a good idea of which cars or trucks consume more fuel than most, but the following modern everyday cars that made the list may surprise you a bit.

To begin, let’s have a look at the world’s least fuel efficient compact, subcompact and mini compact cars. In the compact car category, there is a tie, as both the Bentley Azure and Bentley Brooklands get 11 miles per gallon with their 6.8 litre V8s. Both cars take premium fuel, so the ante is upped even more to a staggering $3,968 USD a year in fuel costs.

In the subcompact category is another Bentley, the Continental GTC. This beast sports a fuel hungry 6 litre V12 that gets 12 miles per gallon and costs lucky owners $3,636 yearly in fuel.

Finally, in the mini compact car category there is tie between the Aston Martin DB9 and DBS. Both small cars sport a massive 5.9 litre V12 that propels the car along at a rate of 13 miles per gallon and costs owners $3,357 USD a year in fuel.

You wouldn’t suspect that there are too many station wagons out there that suck gasoline like a large truck or a super car, but as you will see, there are a few. In the small station wagon category we have the Infiniti EX35 AWD that only packs a 3.5 litre V6, but in terms of fuel mileage it gets a measly 19 miles per gallon. Though not as bad as some of the other cars on the list, it still costs owners $2,296 USD a year in fuel to haul the family around.

The “winner” of the midsize station wagon category is the BMW 535i Sport Wagon, which gets 18 miles per gallon compliments of a 3.0 litre V6. When all is said and done at the end of the year, it costs this car’s owner $2,427 USD a year to keep this auto running.

Now we are in the categories that are synonymous with fuel consumption on a massive scale. In the midsize subsection, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti takes the cake with a fuel efficiency of 11 miles per gallon. With its 5.7 litre V12, it will cost an owner around $3,968 USD per year to keep all of those ponies happy.

In the large car subsection, we have a tie between the Maybach 57 and 57S (essentially the same car). Both the 57 and 57S are powered by a 6 litre V12 that gets on average around 12 miles per gallon. In terms of fuel costs per year, the average owner will shell out $3,636 yearly to satisfy this beast.

The World’s Least Fuel Efficient Auto
Finally, we are down to the last car on our list of the world’s least fuel efficient cars. As you have surely noticed by now, many of the cars mentioned come with a hefty price tag, so would-be owners probably have plenty of money to fill up seemingly every time they drive. Nevertheless, even though they aren’t helping their wallets, they aren’t helping the environment either.
Coming in at number one is the Lamborghini Murcielago. Even though the 12-cylinder, 6.5 litre motor can easily propel the car to 200 mph and above, it also eats through fuel like none other, as it gets on average 10.5 miles per gallon off of the assembly line. If you owned this car and drove it daily, it would cost you roughly $4,365 USD a year in fuel. To put this ridiculous fuel consumption into perspective, this auto releases 18.3 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year (assuming that it is driven every day), which is off the chart.
