Online Car Communities: Why You Should Join
|

|
Online forums are a great way to connect with fellow car enthusiasts. For every make of car out there, it is more than likely that there is an online forum for it. There are even forums that are region specific, such as Canadian and American sites. Online car communities offer a great place to socialize, but they offer other benefits as well. Here are some reasons why you should consider becoming a member.
Meet New People
New members are always welcomed no matter which car community you join. On most forums there will be a “New Members” section where you can go and introduce yourself. It is a nice way to get started and meet some of the other members. Socializing with others that share the same vehicle interests as you can be fun and a great way to meet others. Some clubs have monthly or yearly meets where owners can get together, hang out and check out each other’s cars. Sometimes there are also “cruises” organized to take advantage of the nice weather and sights along the way, as well as track meets.
While forums are a convenient way to connect with others with the same passion for your vehicle, it can also be a fun way to connect in an “off-topic” scene. An off-topic area of the forum allows you to discuss anything non-car related, whether it is about the weather, sports or to share a funny story.
Marketplace
Most forums will have a marketplace area where members can buy, sell or even swap different car parts by posting the items. As a new member, be sure to use the marketplace with caution. Every board has its problems with scammers and dishonest sellers. Do your research on a member you would like to buy an item from. Can you see the item in person? Are there other members from the forum that would vouch for the seller? Do they have photos of the item that you could look at? Ask a lot of questions because if the transaction turns into a conflict, it is very difficult to recover your money. But on the other hand there are also great, honest sellers out there that take care and pride in their vehicle as much as you do.
Some sites will also feature approved sponsors that are usually stores that sell parts for your specific vehicle. It’s a good way to get a part at a discounted rate while dealing with a professional business. Any problems you might encounter will likely be easier to sort out with the vendor as word-of-mouth among members is one of the best ways they can generate more business.
If there is a part or service that is in high demand among forum members, sometimes there will be a “group buy” organized. For example, if there is interest in a group buy for window tinting, someone can inquire at a few reputable shops for a special price according to the number of those who are interested. Most stores and garages will offer a better deal depending on the amount of cars or volume of purchases involved. The more buyers, the better the deal.
Tips, Tricks And Advice
Special interest message boards are also very valuable in terms of advice and tips from fellow car owners. Many members are knowledgeable about either your specific car or with cars in general. There are lots of occasions when other vehicle owners are having the same problem as you, so it is a great way to find out what the problem is and how others dealt with it. Don’t be afraid if you think you may be asking a basic question. There are members out there that understand you are new to the community and are glad to help.
Some community members take the time to document a step-by-step do-it-yourself guide for different car-related activities such as changing a headlight bulb, changing the oil or replacing a part. It is also helpful if you are trying to locate or access a part on your vehicle, but are having problems finding it. But before you take apart your car and realize you can’t put it back together, identify the level of difficulty with the project and approach it with patience. It is also handy if a member lives nearby so they can give you a hand if you are stuck.
Fellow members can also serve as a sounding board for suggestions or ideas that you have. They will also offer suggestions to the best repair shops, garages, stores, dealerships or contacts that they deal with.
